Students add JAVA literacy to their resumes thanks to Oracle and SHSEF.

With Oracle's support, we are able to offer a JAVA programming course at Sequoia that introduces fundamental concepts in a hands-on, engaging manner. The class is accessible to all students in grades 9-12, including those with little or no programming experience, and prepares them to use JAVA in the workplace.

Students develop the knowledge to effectively use computer programming in their studies of mathematics, the sciences, the arts, and the humanities. The course emphasizes larger-scale projects, with support for students to set and meet project goals/deadlines, and can include guest speakers from industry, academia, and nonprofits throughout the course.

Sequoia’s Computer Science Pathway is designed for the school’s unique population in order to close the achievement gap in technological skills that are necessary for the 21st-century workforce.

Within Sequoia’s Computer Science Pathway, JAVA is a central offering among Information Technology classes, which also includes a Mobile Applications Design course. The Java course also enriches the depth of learning for students entering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Math Application and Interpretations pathway, as programming concepts are integrated into this course. The course makes use of the Oracle Academy JAVA curriculum, serving as a springboard to higher-level programming classes, as well as giving students the tools to study computing concepts independently.

We continue to be grateful for Oracle’s vision and commitment to growing a strong future workforce in our shared community!
